I have spent 37 years selling sofa beds. I have manufactured them, designed them, retailed them and slept in them. I have learnt what is required to make a sofa bed a great sofa bed.
1. Great bed mechanism
2. Great mattress
3. Great style
4. Great upholstery
5. Great comfort
6. Great – but will it fit?
The best bed mechanism pulls out easily without the need to remove any of the cushions. It should have a steel frame with a webbed or slatted base and should be guaranteed for 5 years.
The mattress should be at least 198cm long and 14cm deep. It should be available in widths from 115cm to 160cm. In the UK people like spring interior mattresses which can either be open spring or the more expensive pocket spring.
A high quality foam or memory foam mattress is fine for every night use as well. I think the pocket spring offers the best combination of comfort, durability, and value for money.
Sofa beds do not have to be box shaped. A lot of them are because the bed mechanism tends to dictate that sort of shape. The Stan 1 is an example of this.
The Stan 1 is a great sofa bed but more interesting designs are available. The same bed mechanism can be fitted into these softer, less rectangular shapes:

Comfort is a subjective matter. Some people like firm seating and the Stan 1 with its foam seat and back cushions provides this. If you prefer a softer seating experience go for feather cushions with a foam insert. This type of cushion provides a softer seat without the need for daily “plumping” of the cushions. The Dave sofa bed below has feather and foam cushions.
All feather seat cushions are not a good idea on a sofa bed. They go flat too easily.
The cover should be removable. This is not only practical for cleaning purposes but 10 years after purchasing the sofa bed you can get new covers for a fraction of the cost of having a sofa re-upholstered.
It is also useful to buy a sofa bed that has a fire retardant liner underneath the fabric cover. This means the sofa bed can be upholstered in a fabric that can be washed. Fabrics that are at least 70% natural do not have to be treated with a fire retardant chemical and can therefore be washed. Not all natural fabrics are washable but many are.
Having bought the sofa bed of your dreams and having invested a great deal of time and money in the process, you do not want to see the delivery team put it back on the van again because it will not get into the room you want it to be in.
A sofa bed that can be assembled in the room where you want it is the answer. One company makes sofa beds with removable arms, back panel, and back cushions and has all the five properties listed in this blog. That sofa bed company is Milano Bedding and you can see their products at www.sofabeds.co.uk
